Educational Track: Healthy Materials for Designers

The growing maker movement and rise of micro-manufacturing is providing designers and building owners new opportunities to source furniture and other building components hyper-locally from artisans, resulting in great community benefit. New technology platforms on consumer-driven marketplaces and social media are now allowing micro manufacturing to compete at scale with multinational companies in the commercial space. Using Etsy’s new headquarters as a case study, this presentation will explore the rise of the maker movement, its implications for designers and builders, and its potential to realign the economic impact of construction with building local living economies and supporting artistic communities.
